God Didn’t Want Robots

Today I am featuring a Guest Post by Scott Lolmaugh.  He regularly blogs at: http://dontbeliveit.blogspot.com

220px-Shadow_Hand_Bulb_largeWhy would God create people who were capable of sinning, if he knew sin would send them to Hell?  Why would he create people he knew would reject him?

I have heard from many Christians that, “God didn’t want robots.”

This is a very interesting answer, but comes with its share of problems.  Why didn’t he want robots?  Well, because he wanted people who would choose to love him of their own free will.  But, according to the Bible, is the choice really ours?

“No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.”  John 6:44

“It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.”  Romans 9:16

From what I have read, The Bible teaches that without divine intervention, we would all choose the path to Hell.  We are incapable of being good enough to escape judgement, and incapable of choosing His salvation.  However, even if we could choose God, problems still arise from this argument

Would it really be a choice of free will, when the alternative is Hell?  If someone puts a gun to your head and says, “Give me your wallet,” are you really free to make a decision? And while we may have the option of choosing heaven or hell, did we choose to be born?  did we choose to come into existence?  If the choice is ours, it seems God is forcing us into a decision that we might not want to make

If I had the option to create free beings, knowing that they would use their freedom to destroy themselves and each other, and eventually be tortured at my hand, or to create robots, I would like to think that I would choose robots.  However, unlike God, I am not all powerful, and all knowing, so maybe that would affect my decision.

Thanks Scott!

Thanks for reading.  I look forward to your comments.

Indeed, Scott, those are excellent questions, and I have yet to hear any good answers from Christians for them.

    According to Wikipedia:

"A Hobson's choice is a free choice in which only one option is offered. As a person may refuse to take that option, the choice is therefore between taking the option or not; 'take it or leave it'"

In this case, there are indeed two options, but the second is a choice no sane person would opt for. The object of putting this false choice out there would seem to be allowing the supposedly non-robots god wanted to create to choose him on their own. The problem is that, at least in the US, no court is doing to recognize any kind of "freedom of choice" under duress and certainly not the extreme duress which is represented by the concept of hell.

Apparently, god wants boot-licking sycophants who freely choose to be boot-licking sycophants. There are some serious contradictions in the bible, but that one takes a prize.

Agreed. The entire notion of free will is nothing more than an apologist's trick–they use it as a "get out of jail free card" for when they do not have a good argument. They (at least amateur apologists) do not seem to realize that this "trick" fails. The seasoned apologist may realize this, but does not care, they aren't looking to convert people like us anyway. They'd rather preach to the choir, so to say.

While reading this article, it brought to mind some speeches that I have listened to by Sam Harris on the illusion of free choice. Sam Harris is an Atheist and Neuroscientist. His argument is that we technically do not have free will. We don't have the choice of where we are born etc and that our brains subconsciously have made our determined choices, based on our personal experiences and education between a fraction or even up to eight seconds (tested in MRI) before we are consciously aware of them. An example that Sam Harris mentioned in one of his talks was about a man who had begun to suffer from depression and anger. These were not usual behaviours but one day while in a clock tower and massacring people while under police gun fire, he penned a letter prior to killing himself. Immediately the community thought him to be a mass killer and psychotic murderer, a man of bad disposition. In the letter he requested an autopsy because he had also found his behaviour strange and had always thought he was a good person. This was granted and during the autopsy a tumor was discovered growing and pressing on the part of the brain that controls our emotions and thoughts. I believe conscious choice is an illusion, that doesn't make us robots. Deep down both nature and nurture, neither of which we have a choice in creates a condition or programming of our wills.

The Lord does whatever He chooses. Our lives are not our own. Saddened to have read about Esau – he probably was a generous-hearted sort of man, but was left by the Lord's decision to remain in a state of disbelief. The Lord has the upper hand and if we don't like it of just inhales to be us.
